Dustin Rousseau (b. 1984) is a Louisiana-based artist who takes inspiration from the built environment. His paintings are heavily layered and multi-faceted compositions that engage and provoke through his use of calligraphic strokes and gestural hand movements.

Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, his early childhood curiosities with animated films and his obsession with drawing led him to begin taking art classes at a young age. He continued taking art courses throughout high school, and eventually graduated and began a college career in animation. Seeing a technological shift in animation and the way that animated films were produced, he decided to switch his focus toward architecture, as it provided him a way to produce 3-dimensional art through the use of drawing, painting, photography, and model-making. The gestural and fluid practice of making architecture contributed to a new perspective on producing art. He graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies in 2009, and a Masters in Architecture in 2011.

Dustin’s paintings are an ever evolving exploration into abstraction, using the insight and knowledge developed from an education and continued career in architecture. Form, space, order, scale, and dimension are all elements which he uses to tell his story on the canvas. Employing repetitive strokes and broad movements to create texture and definition, the paintings evoke a sense of architectural order and a hint of space making. His grand gestures pull emotion and drama across the canvas, while his smaller scratches and markings emit a humble confidence in his ideological approach to linework.

Dustin’s work recently caught the attention of Portia de Rossi, owner and CEO of General Public Art, an art curation company that specializes in 3D printing paintings to be sold to a massive audience. Seventeen of his paintings have been scanned, 3D printed as synographs, and are now being sold exclusively through Restoration Hardware stores and online at RH.com.
